Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Vote Blocked in Senate

In a bleak setback to efforts at ending the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, the US Senate failed to beat back a filibuster of the annual Defense Department authorization bill.

In a September 21 cloture vote aimed at proceeding to a floor debate on the authorization bill, which includes compromise language spelling out steps for ending the gay ban already approved by the House, the Democratic leadership was only able to muster 56 votes (though substantively 57), four short of the 60 required to end the Republican blockade.
